Meet AIvid: A solution for newsrooms that turns articles into videos within minutes

28 Jan 2025

Let us show you our new video generator, AIvid. This tool uses AI to convert newsroom articles into videos quickly, in bulk, and directly in your CMS. It offers a practical solution for publishers who want to scale their video content efficiently.

Video is one of the most sought-after formats by news publishers, but video production is still expensive, time-consuming, and requires specialized skills. Since we have a long history of developing innovative newsroom solutions (see our AI concepts, AI assistant, and editorial system case study for more), we decided to help publishers turn their articles into compelling videos – fast, efficient, and scalable videos.

We have developed a product called AIvid, an AI-powered solution for automating video creation. We’re in the prototype phase, and honestly, the results have already surprised us. Publishers are testing it manually, converting their articles into videos. The feedback has been amazing, and the demand is clear. In this article, we’ll present AIvid in more detail and state clearly what its strengths are and – quite honestly – areas that still pose challenges.

Who can benefit from AIvid?

AIvid is best suited for newsrooms that must produce a high volume of videos on a tight schedule. The tool thrives on automation, taking the heavy lifting off journalists and editors. All it needs is an article with accompanying images, and within five minutes, you have a complete video ready to go. It’s a simple, fast, and cost-effective way to expand your content formats without overburdening your team. And you do it all in your own CMS.

What are the biggest strengths of our solution?

Speed: AIvid delivers a ready mp4 video within 5 minutes of publishing an article.

Freshness: You get a new format created from the same content.

Cost: Starting at just $3 per video.

Multilingual: No language limitations – voiceovers and subtitles are automatically tailored. Articles, for example, in French, can be transformed into videos in English.

Versatility: Articles can cover any topic and format – from news to evergreen and from politics to sports and lifestyle.

Templates: Different types of content (e.g., galleries, reviews, recipes) can be presented using tailored templates. AIvid adjusts formats, sizes, and ratios to various social platforms and can produce vertical, horizontal, or square videos.

Ease of use: No advanced technical skills are required; a 15-minute training presentation is sufficient for the editorial team.

CMS integration: No need for separate applications – journalists work within their existing tools.

Live preview: Journalists can preview videos instantly without rendering and make real-time adjustments.

Prompt management: Prompts for video creation can be customized in collaboration with publishers to match their needs.

Copyright compliance: AIvid ensures adherence to copyright regulations and any limitations on the photos and videos used.

Adaptable roadmap: We continuously adjust our roadmap based on publisher requirements and meeting insights. Nothing is set in stone; we adapt to the market.

One integration, multiple formats: Beyond videos, we plan to introduce other formats that could be created using the same tool, such as quizzes.

The flip side: Where AIvid isn’t the perfect fit

We are aware that AIvid’s focus on speed and automation inevitably involves trade-offs. The tool might struggle to provide impactful results for publishers with limited visual assets; it needs a solid base of images and videos to deliver a satisfactory outcome.

Certain types of content, such as interviews, long-form articles, and opinion pieces, are more difficult to adapt. We are currently working on this challenge, and the first results are very promising, so we hope we will post an update about it soon. Moreover, the editorial team is always in control of the final result, and video materials can also be edited manually.

Other shortcomings (for now), include:

  • API-related risks: We plan to integrate alternatives like Claude while using OpenAI. If one API experiences technical issues, the application can quickly switch to another to minimize downtime. This mitigates risks beyond our control but requires readiness to implement alternatives.

  • Model imperfections: Challenges include handling numerals, abbreviations, geographic names, and paraphrasing quotes. Transcription also has minor inaccuracies in these areas.

  • Audience considerations: Our solution might feel too entertainment-focused for some viewers. Older, more conservative audiences may not respond well to this video format, especially for publishers with a serious image.

  • Repetition of format: The "slideshow" approach has its limitations. Rather than high-end, manually crafted video quality, it's designed for speed and volume.

How does AIvid work?

We designed AIvid to be intuitive and hassle-free. Journalists in your newsroom don’t need specific prompting skills; a short introductory training is enough to get things going. You also don’t need extra tools – a journalist chooses an article to transform directly in the CMS.

The workflow:

  1. A journalist chooses an article in your CMS.
  2. Our engine generates videos directly from the text of a selected article using pictures and video samples from your database. The engine ensures compliance with copyright and any publishing restrictions of the input material. There is also an option to prompt AIvid to make a video, which is not based on an article but created from a bare prompt (the engine writes the text and makes a video) – if a publisher wants to have it.
  3. You get a polished video tailored to your needs and distribution platforms within minutes – with subtitles and a voiceover.
  4. The final effect is fully controlled by the journalist, who can edit the video according to needs and requirements.

In the 1st phase of the implementation, we adjust Aivid to the publisher’s needs and workflows. Once we get satisfactory results, we move to phase 2, when the tool can be further customized. This phase also allows for the simultaneous generation of multiple videos, with minimal control of a journalist.

A journalist can edit all elements of the video – the voiceover text, subtitles, and images.
